Acid stress and microbial resilience: Insights into adaptive responses

Abstract

Microbes encounter fluctuations in environmental factors, including pH, which directly affect microbial growth. Acid stress, defined as the combined biological effect of H+ ions and weak acid concentrations, triggers various microbial responses. This article examines the adaptive mechanisms employed by bacteria to survive and thrive in acidic conditions. Acidophilic, alkalophilic, and neutralophilic bacteria each demonstrate unique strategies for maintaining pH homeostasis. By producing enzymes, modulating proton pumps, and employing acid tolerance responses (ATRs), these microbes can survive and adapt to harsh acidic environments. Understanding these mechanisms provides insights into microbial survival and has implications for industrial applications and pathogenic control.
