Clinical, haematological and serum biochemical evaluation in dogs with large intestinal inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) encompasses a cluster of chronic intestinal ailments of uncertain etiology, distinguished by the widespread infiltration of inflammatory cellular elements into the lamina propria of the intestinal mucosa. This study aimed to examine the clinical disease activity and haemato-biochemical changes related to large intestinal IBD in dogs. Clinical disease activity in dogs with IBD, was assessed using the Canine IBD Activity Index (CIBDAI) and Canine Chronic Enteropathy Clinical Activity Index (CCECAI) scoring systems. Chronic diarrhoea was the predominant clinical sign exhibited by the dogs with IBD. Haematological findings revealed a statistically significant decrease in Hb and increase in VPRC values and a significant increase in TLC values in dogs with inflammatory bowel disease when compared to the control group. Significant increase in ALP and decrease in TP and albumin values were noted. No statistically significant change was observed in serum folate cyanocobalamin concentrations in dogs with large intestinal IBD.
