Solid household waste production in the city of Niamey (Niger)

Abstract

The paper aims at characterizing the solid household waste produced in Niamey. The waste studied comes directly from households. Three neighborhoods with different living standards constitute the sites where the household waste are collected. The characterization results showed that the average daily production of an inhabitant of Niamey is 0.44kg. However, this production varies depending on the inhabitants' living standard. Thus, it is 0.29; 0.40 and 0.62kg / day / inhabitant for the low, medium and high living standard respectively. The waste studied is characterized by a moisture content of 16% and a lower calorific value of 990.9 kcal/kg. The fractions of recoverable represent 12.95, 11.58, 7.69, 4.52, 4.26% and 41%, respectively for fines, fermentable, plastics, metals, paper and cardboard and organic matter. These data appear valuable for decision makers since they would enable them to optimize the management mode and to efficiently size the facilities meant for treatment.
