Immunohistochemical expression of cyclin-D1 in colorectal carcinoma with clinicopathological correlation

Abstract

Background: Colorectal Cancer is the most common type of gastrointestinal cancer worldwide. In normal cells, cyclin D1 expression levels are strictly regulated, conversely, in cancer, its activity is intensified in various manners. Aim: To investigate the expression of cyclin D1 in adenocarcinoma of colon. To correlate the expression of cyclin D1 with various clinicopathological parameters. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Teaching Laboratories and Gastrointestinal Tract Hospital at the Medical City Teaching Complex. A convenient sampling method was adopted to enroll 50 who were diagnosed with colorectal cancer. The paraffin-embedded blocks of those patients were retrieved from the patient's records. Results: High cyclin-D1 expression score was substantially greater in tumours with lympho-vascular invasion (62.5%) than those without (15.4%) (P-value=0.001). No significant correlation was seen between cyclin-D1 expression and tumour grade (P=0.510) or perineural invasion (P=0.895). The number of lymph nodes involved was associated with cyclin-D1 expression (P=0.016). Conclusion: The cyclin D1 expression was significantly affected by lymphovascular involvement, and lymph node involvement implicating its potential prognostic role in CRC.
