Plants with potential medicinal values from thar desert: Phytochemical constituents and therapeutic activities

Abstract

The Thar Desert in northwestern India, despite its harsh conditions, harbors a diverse range of medicinal plants utilized by local communities for their healthcare needs. This study explores the phytochemical constituents and therapeutic applications of these plants, highlighting the traditional knowledge of the desert’s inhabitants. A comprehensive review identifies over 80 plant species with medicinal properties, detailing their bioactive compounds and health benefits. Notable examples include Achyranthes aspera, known for its anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting effects, and Argemonia mexicana, which possesses antimicrobial and wound-healing properties. The therapeutic potential of Withania somnifera for anxiety and liver protection is also discussed. The rich presence of bioactive compounds in these plants underscores their significance in disease prevention and treatment. The study emphasizes the necessity of conservation efforts to prevent overuse and potential extinction of these valuable resources. It calls for the development of sustainable harvesting methods and the implementation of educational programs to raise awareness about the medicinal benefits and conservation needs of these plants.
