Role of dietary patterns and lifestyle factors in prevention of cardiovascular disease

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease remains a significant global concern, particularly in developing and middle-income nations. Preventive measures can reduce the occurrence of premature heart attacks and strokes by up to 80%. The objective of this study is to examine the importance of lifestyle factors and dietary patterns in preventing cardiovascular disease (CVD) through an analysis of their impacts on risk factors including obesity, dyslipidaemia, and hypertension. Research examining the impact of lifestyle factors and dietary patterns on the prevention of cardiovascular disease typically employs observational or interventional methodologies. Consistently, research demonstrates that adherence to specific dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet or the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, is linked to a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. Similarly, lifestyle factors, including regular physical activity, weight management, smoking cessation, and stress reduction, play crucial roles in cardiovascular health. Therefore, adopting specific dietary patterns and healthy lifestyle habits can significantly contribute to the prevention of CVD. The findings emphasize the importance of adopting good eating habits and lifestyle behaviours to avoid cardiovascular disease. People must be strongly encouraged to consume fruits, vegetables, whole cereals, lean proteins, and healthy lipids while limiting their intake of processed foods, fizzy beverages, and excessive salt.
