Association between dental anomalies and cleft lip and palate: A literature review

Abstract

Background: People having cleft lip and palate (CLP) are found to have higher chances of having dental anomalies. This research had a goal to study how common different types of dental anomalies are in people with CLP compared with those who do not have this condition, called control subjects. Methods: We did a literature review of observational studies. We searched electronic databases for studies that report the occurrence of dental anomalies in people with CLP and control groups. Results: In the review, we included a total of 14 studies. The CLP population had significantly higher rates for dental agenesis, supernumerary teeth, enamel defects and developmental abnormalities compared to the control group. The occurrence of dental anomalies showed variation among different types of clefts with unilateral or bilateral cleft lip and palate displaying highest prevalence rates. Conclusion: People who have CLP show a very big number of dental anomalies, much more than the normal population. It is very important to have early evaluations for dental issues and complete methods of handling these complex oral health needs in this group of people.
