In vitro anti-diabetic activity evaluation of standardized extracts of Bambusa tulda roxb.

Abstract

The prevailing situation where mankind is completely dependent on chemical substitutes, treatment based on natural resources has become utmost essential. Modern medicinal system undoubtedly is coming up with advanced treatment strategies but diabetes round the globe still remains alarming. The current research emphasises on the pharmacognostic exploration of and its association as a potent anti-diabetic agent. Bambusa tulda Roxb. family Poaceae, native to Indian subcontinent is having wide range medicinal properties. The phytochemical screening of methanolic extract of Bambusa tulda Roxb. shoot showed the presence of flavonoids, steroids, fats, oils, saponins and tannins. In-vitro anti-diabetic activity was found to increase in dose dependant manner for both the extract. In Alpha-amylase, the IC50 value for the crude extract was 166.84 while the IC50 value of the reference Acarbose was 94.79. In Alpha-glucosidase, the IC50 value for the crude extract was 132.82 while the IC50 value of the reference Acarbose was 77.93.
