Diagnostic insights from haematological and biochemical profiles in graded murrah buffaloes affected with uterine torsion

Abstract

Uterine torsion, a critical condition leading to dystocia in buffaloes can significantly impact the health of affected animals. The present study aimed to assess the alterations in haematological and biochemical parameters in graded Murrah buffaloes affected with uterine torsion compared to those undergoing normal calving (eutocia) process. Blood samples were collected from affected and control buffaloes to estimate parameters including haemoglobin, packed cell volume (PCV), neutrophil and lymphocyte counts, as well as biochemical markers such as total protein, creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). The results showed a significant reduction in haemoglobin (10.62±0.90 g/dL vs. 11.88±0.94 g/dL) and total protein levels (8.13±0.85 g/dL vs. 9.22±0.57 g/dL) in torsion-affected buffaloes. Elevated levels of neutrophils (58.17±5.12%) and BUN (36.48±8.22 mg/dL) were observed, alongside increased creatinine (1.16±0.86 mg/dL). Conversely, lymphocyte counts were significantly lower in affected buffaloes (34.00±5.51% vs. 40.67±3.33%). These findings suggest that uterine torsion leads to severe physiological stress which is characterized by impaired haematological and biochemical profiles, including anaemia, elevated inflammatory markers and compromised kidney function. Immediate and effective management is essential to mitigate the adverse effects and improve outcomes in buffaloes suffering from this condition.
