Musculoskeletal ultrasound use in children with renal failure on regular hemodialysis
Abstract
Previously, end-stage renal disease was considered fatal until the development of sustainable hemodialysis and kidney transplants became available. Individuals suffering from chronic kidney disease and undergoing hemodialysis are susceptible to various musculoskeletal disorders such as osteomalacia, osteosclerosis, and osteoporosis. Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) is a valuable imaging technique which has become increasingly popular in recent years. MSUS used to identify any abnormalities in the musculoskeletal system related to End-stage renal disease. The benefits of MSUS include the ability to detect synovial hypertrophy, joint effusion, cartilage thickness, tendon damage, nerve lesions, muscle mass, tenosynovitis, and affection for both hard and soft tissues. Particularly for targeted musculoskeletal and neurological exams, MSUS offers a number of clear benefits over conventional radiography, CT, and MRI.
