Synergistic larvicidal efficacy of essential oil of Citrus limon (L.) SS and Euphorbia milii (des moul.) Against the third instar larvae of dengue vector Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus 1762) (Diptera: Culicidae)

Abstract

Plant based insecticides are promising because they are naturally biodegradable and less hazardous to non-target creatures, botanical insecticides are viable substitute to synthetic pesticides for the control of mosquitoes. The current study was carried out to evaluate the synergetic larvicidal efficacy of C. Limon and Euphorbia milii against the L3 of Aedes aegypti. The essential oil of Citrus limon and Euphorbia milii were also assessed independently on the L3 of Aedes aegypti at doses of 200ppm, 150ppm 100 ppm, 50 ppm and 25 ppm. The larvicidal activity was examined using the standard protocols suggested by the WHO (1996). After 48 hours highest mortality was recorded in Citrus limon in combination with Euphorbia milii at concentrations 200ppm.The LC50 value was estimated by the Finney’s (1971) Probit analysis. The LC50 Value of Citrus limon was 146.969ppm and Euphorbia milii 120.804ppm while the synergistic larvicidal activity showed the great result with LC50 value 81.259 ppm.
