Innovative prosthetic rehabilation of orbital exenteration post covid mucomycosis: A case report

Abstract

Rehabilitation of facial defects is a challenging task, requiring an individualized design of the technique for each patient. The disfigurement associated with the loss of an eye may result in significant physical and emotional problems. This case report describes the rehabilitation journey of a 44 year old male patient who underwent orbital exenteration due to mucormycosis subsequent to COVID-19 infection. . The treatment plan was to rehabilitate the patient with an orbital prosthesis combining polymethyl methacrylate (conformer shell substructure) and room temperature vulcanizing silicone (prosthetic superstructure). Existing anatomic undercut was used to retain the conformer substructure. This design strategy aims to maintain post-surgical tissue health, extend prosthesis longevity, enhance esthetics, and provide secure retention.
