Fibromyalgia from an oral point of view
Abstract
Introduction: Fibromyalgia causes widespread pain and fatigue, but the cause is unclear. It often goes undiagnosed because symptoms like memory problems, mood swings, and jaw pain can appear unrelated. Objective: To analyze the literature on fibromyalgia, particularly its etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and oral manifestations.Methodology: A literature review was carried out in PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases using the keywords: fibromyalgia, etiology, epidemiology, oral health, diagnosis, treatment., and Boolean parameters AND, OR and NOT.Results: Fibromyalgia is a complex disorder that causes chronic widespread pain, fatigue, sleep problems and cognitive disturbances. Its origin is multifactorial, including neurochemical alterations, immune dysfunction, genetic predisposition and environmental factors. It mainly affects women and its prevalence increases with age. Diagnosis is based on symptoms and treatment is multidisciplinary, including exercise, cognitive-behavioral therapy, medications and other therapies. Fibromyalgia significantly impacts quality of life. A comprehensive and personalized approach, encompassing orofacial, emotional and joint manifestations, is crucial to improve patients' well-being.Conclusion: Fibromyalgia is a complex disorder that generates chronic pain, fatigue and alterations in sleep and cognition. Its diagnosis is based on symptoms and treatment is multidisciplinary. While it impacts quality of life, a comprehensive and personalized approach can improve patients' well-being.
