Relationship between globalization and environmental sustainability

Abstract

Globalization is the process of fostering cooperation among countries and groups globally in economic, cultural, political, and technological realms. Originating in Western nations in the 20th century, globalization is intertwined with the concept of environmental sustainability, which involves wisely using natural resources to meet present needs without compromising future generations' abilities to do the same. In the contemporary era, globalization and environmental sustainability are seen as complementary forces. Globalization has led to increased global awareness of environmental issues and facilitated international efforts to address challenges like climate change, pollution, and deforestation while promoting the development of renewable energy sources. Consequently, there have been reductions in negative environmental impacts from resource extraction and use. Moreover, globalization has contributed to human resource development, such as improving education, employment, and gross domestic product levels, particularly in resource-rich countries that have gained access to international markets. However, globalization has also brought negative consequences for environmental stability. Industrialized countries' competition has led to increased greenhouse gas emissions, fuel consumption, and biodiversity loss. Extensive use of fossil fuels like gas and oil has worsened air, water, and soil pollution, as well as climate change. These challenges pose significant threats, with some environmental issues, such as degradation and global warming, appearing to worsen over time, potentially leading to a severe ecological crisis. In this paper, I have tried to show the mutual relationship between globalization and environmental sustainability, both in positive and negative aspects, and have also mentioned the schemes run by the government.
