Stem cells in the umbilical cord

Abstract

The future of medicine lies in stem cells. It is believed that stem cells hold enormous medicinal and biotechnological promise. In addition to replacing damaged or malfunctioning cells, this will also allow the cells to be salvaged and/or deliver therapeutic proteins after they have been modified to do so. Both embryonic and foetal stem cells are currently surrounded by ethical and scientific questions that prevent their widespread use.
