Impact of planned teaching programme on STDS awareness among adolescents: A quasi-experimental study

Abstract

Background: India,\r\nwith a population of 1.4 billion, has the largest adolescent population\r\nglobally, totalling 253 million. Adolescents, aged 10-19, represent a significant\r\ndemographic that can contribute to the country\'s development if healthy,\r\neducated, and informed. However, they often lack adequate knowledge about\r\nsexually transmitted diseases (STDs), increasing their risk of infection.\r\nEducational interventions are crucial in improving awareness and knowledge\r\nabout STDs among young individuals. Aim:\r\nThis study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching programme on\r\nknowledge regarding sexually transmitted diseases among adolescents in selected\r\ncollege Bangalore. Materials and Methods: The study adopted quasi-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test\r\nresearch design. Sixty adolescents from 1st and 2nd Pre-University (PU) classes\r\nat NSVK PU College, Bangalore, were selected through convenience sampling\r\ntechnique. Demographic Performa, Structured questionnaire and Planned teaching\r\nprogramme on sexually transmitted disease were used to collect the data.\r\nDescriptive and inferential statistics were employed for data analysis. Results:\r\nThe findings revealed that the mean knowledge score significantly increased\r\nfrom 13.21 in the pre-test to 20.71 in the post-test. Pre-test results showed\r\nthat 7% of adolescents had good knowledge, 10% had average knowledge, and 83%\r\nhad poor knowledge. Post-test results indicated that 14% had good knowledge,\r\n83% had average knowledge, and only 3% had poor knowledge. The knowledge\r\nimprovement was statistically significant at the 0.05 level. Conclusion:\r\nFrom the findings of the present study, it can be concluded that the planned\r\nteaching programme effectively enhanced adolescent’s knowledge about sexually\r\ntransmitted diseases.
