Human health risks to the use of chemical mosquito repellents: A review

Abstract

Mosquitoes are the main carriers of diseases and pests. Millions of deaths each year due to Mosquito-borne diseases. Using insect repellent reduces the risk of mosquito bites. To protect from mosquitoes and mosquito-related diseases, various types of mosquito repellents have been widely used, including liquid vaporizers, coils, and mats. The current use of synthetic pesticides to control insects and other arthropods causes several health problems for both humans and the environment. Because the health risks arising from complications of mosquito bites can become life-threatening, it is necessary to explore alternative methods to control them. As a result, there is increasing interest in alternative strategies, such as the use of plant-based mosquitoes. This review will provide information on the potential side effects of uncontrolled use of insect repellents and alternative safe control suggested for mosquitoes.
