Effects of probiotic Lactobacillus species on the kidney and liver tissues of type 2 diabetic mice
Abstract
Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disease which causes severe damage to the liver and kidneys. This study aims to assess the effect of probiotic Lactobacillus species on the liver and kidney tissues of T2DM mice. Streptozotocin-induced diabetic male mice were treated with probiotic Lactobacillus species (1 x 109 CFU/mL) while the non-diabetic control group was given placebo for the treatment period. After four weeks of treatment, the mice were made to fast, after which they were weighed and anesthetized. Their liver and kindey samples were removed, weighed and used for histological analsis.
