Role of respiratory system in producing speech sounds

Abstract
Phonetics studies human speech. Speech is produced by bringing air from the lungs to the larynx (respiration), where the vocal cords may be held open to allow the air to pass through or may vibrate to make a sound (phonation). The air flow from the lungs is then shaped by the articulators in the mouth and nose (articulation). Phonetics is the scientific study of speech sounds. It may be also described as the study of production, transmission and reception of speech sounds. It furthers the classification of the sound into consonant and vowel sounds. Phonetics is also concerned with manner and the place of articulation of these sounds.
