Study on the incidence of demodectic mange in dogs in and around Mizoram

Abstract

The incidence of demodectic mange age, sex, breeds, months and seasons wise suspected dogs were observed and recorded to determine the incidence of canine demodectic mange accordingly, from all 35 dermatitis affected dogs. In month wise observation out of 35 samples examined thehighest incidence was observed in the month of June 2018 (14.28%) followed by September 2018 (11.42%) January, 2018 (8.57%), December, 2017(5.71%) February, 2018 (5.71%), March, 2018(5.71%), April, 2018(5.71%), May, 2018(5.71%), July, 2018(5.71%), October, 2018 (5.71%), November, 2018(5.71%), December, 2018(5.71%), January, 2019(5.71%), February, 2019(5.71%) and August, 2018 (2.85%). For age wise incidence of demodicosis; dogs were classified into four different age groups viz. 0-6months, 6-12 months, 1-3years and above 3years. Demodicosis infections occurred almost in all the age groups starting from puppies (0-6months) to more than 3 years old dogs. Highest incidence of demodicosis (28.57%) was observed in the puppies (0-6 months) and above 3 years age group and least rate of incidence (17.14%) was observed in the age group of 1-3 years. The sex wise incidence study revealed that male dogs were more prone to demodicosis (51.43%) than female dogs (48.57%). Inbreed wise predisposition of demodicosis in dogs, it was found that crossbred dogs was more infestated with demodicosis (34.28%) followed by American Pitbull (17.14%), Pug (11.42%), Labrador (11.42%), Great Dane (11.42%), German Shepherd (8.57%) and Husky (5.71%). Season wise predisposition of demodicosis in dogs revealed highest in rainy season (37.5 %) followed by winter (33.33%) and summer (29.16 %), respectively.
