To determine the prevalence of postpartum depression in patients in RD Gardi Medical College, Ujjain

Abstract

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a mood disorder that affects adult mothers yearly with depressive symptoms that often occurs within a few months to a year after birth. The present study was conducted to determine the prevalence of postpartum depression in patients in RD Gardi Medical College, Ujjain. Material and method: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at RD Gardi Medical College, Ujjain to determine the prevalence of postpartum depression in patients. The study was conducted within a period of 2 months. The complete data collection was done . A Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was used to screen for depression. The PHQ-9 is a 9-question instrument given to patients in a primary care setting to screen for the presence and severity of depression. Data were analyzed using statistical software SPSS version 21.0. Results: In the present study total women included were 300 in which maximum women were of age group 18-27 years (45.3%). Out of 300 women, the majority (90%) did not have any indications of postpartum depression (PPD), while 10% had postpartum depression (PPD). The severity of depression shows that 40% out of the total number of women had minimal depression; 23.33% had moderate depression and mild depression, respectively; 3.33% had moderately severe depression with 10% of the women had severe depression. Conclusion: This study concluded that the majority women did not have any indications of postpartum depression.
