Effect of sex, age, weight and season on the prevalence and intensity of helminthic infection in desi poultry birds from Darbhanga region of North Bihar, India

Abstract

The present communication deals with the study of the effect of sex, age, weight of the host and Season on the prevalence and intensity of infection of technical helminthic infection in desi poultry birds. The study was conducted during February 2014 to January 2015 from different farms in and around Darbhanga Town. In all out of 315 (98 young and 217 adult birds) examined and 206 (69 young adult) were found to harbour helminths in their intestine viz. Raillietina (21.47%), Davainee (3.06%), Ascaridsia (26.53%), Heterakis (6.12%) and mixed (13.26%) were. No significant difference in the prevalence of Raillietina and Ascaridia was found due to host age and sex, through the higher prevalence of Ascaridia. No significant difference in the seasonal prevalence of Ascaridia and was found due to host age and sex, through the higher prevalence of Ascaridia and Raillietina. The mean intensity of Raillietinaa and Ascaridia were higher in young than in adult desi poultry birds but markedly no difference. The highest mean intensity rate of Ascaridia was observed during summer, while no significant difference due to season for Raillietina. The data obtained in the study can be very useful in designing of improved poultry management in the area, as thus the first report from this paper of Bihar.
