Pharmacognostic, phytochemical and antimicrobial studies on ethanolic extract of aerial parts of Cissus pallida

Abstract

Cissus is a genus of approximately 350 species of woody vines in the grape family Vitaceae. Cissus pallida is a deciduous, slender, climbing shrub. In India this species is reported to be vastly present in Maharashtra, Kolhapur, Nasik, Pune, Satara, Thane. An antimicrobial is a substance that kills or inhibits the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, or protozoans, as well as destroying viruses. In the present study ethanolic extract of aerial parts of Cissus pallida was used to screen phytochemical constituents and antimicrobial activity by cup plate method. Strains of Streptomyces aureus and Escherichia coli were used to determine the antimicrobial activity. The extract showed the presence of glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids and steroids. These constituents may be the reason for antimicrobial action. The antimicrobial activity was observed at concentration 100 μg/ml and was reported to be increased with increasing concentrations i.e., 200μg/ml, 300μg/ml and 400μg/ml, 500 μg/ml.
