Assessment of electrical energy requirement for pumping ground water for irrigation operation in the cropped land of Samastipur District, Bihar

Abstract

The electricity requirements for irrigation operation are one of the principal parameter for planning, design and operation of irrigation and water resource system. The electricity consumption in irrigation of the major crops (rice, wheat, sugarcane, maize) of all the blocks of Samastipur district (Bihar) was computed. The total irrigation water requirement was estimated to be 800523.08 ha-m. The total electricity consumption for irrigation operation was found to be 508 mkWh out of which 57% of electrical energy was need in Rabi season and 43 in Kharif season. The average energy requirement for one ha of land i.e. Energy Intensity of Samastipur dristrict for irrigation operation was645.4 kWh.
