Exergames reduces triceps and subscapular skinfolds and improve self-esteem and body image of obese children

Abstract

Exergames appear to be an interesting tool for practicing physical activity with obese or overweight children. The objective of this study was to verify the effects of a physical exercise program with exergames on the self-esteem, body image and anthropometry of overweight or obese children. Forty-two children aged 6 to 11 years obese and/or overweight, were divided into two groups: Exergames group (GE) and Control group (GC). The exercise program with exergames was performed twice a week, on alternate days for 12 weeks. Regarding the results, although it was not possible to identify statistically significant differences in body mass values through the data analysis, significant differences were observed in skinfold values (p≤ 0.01). Significant differences were also observed in the positive affects of the GE and improvement in the results of image distortion and satisfaction (p≤ 0.01). The exercise program with exergames reduced triceps and subscapular skinfolds and improved self-esteem and body image of obese children.
