Short term complications following uncemented hip hemiarthroplasty

Abstract

Introduction & Objectives: Hemiarthroplasty is one of the most commonly done procedures and a recommended treatment for intra-capsular displaced fractures of femoral neck in elderly population (>65 years). This study is aimed to evaluate the early complications in such patients following uncemented hemiarthroplasty using unipolar (Austin Moore Prosthesis) and bipolar implants. Method: A series of 150 consecutive patients (between October 2017 and September 2018) treated with uncemented unipolar and bipolar hemiarthroplasty with at least one year follow-up were evaluated. Prospective data collection was attained from hospital and OPD visits viz. patient demographics, intra-operative iatrogenic fractures, deaths, deep infection, dislocation, peri-prosthetic fractures, implant failure and implant related complications. Results: Average age of patients was 72 years (Range 65-101 years). 60% patients were females. Intra-operative iatrogenic fractures occurred in 16 patients (10.6%). There were two intra-operative deaths. Over all one year mortality was 10%. There were 12 early deep wound infections (8%). 6 dislocations were reported. There were 5 peri-prosthetic fractures. 2 patients required conversion to excision arthroplasty and 1 patient had implant breakage.
