Evaluation of anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of methanolic extract of Berberis lycium Royle

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of methanolic extract of the shade dried fruits of Berberis lycium by oral administration at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg of body weight in healthy Wistar albino rats. Methods: The extract was studied for its anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan-induced and histamine induced hind paw edema in rats and the linear paw circumference was measured at 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 min. after the administration of phlogistic agent. The methanolic extract was also evaluated for analgesic activity using Eddy’s hot plate and Haffner’s tail-clip method in Wistar albino rats.
