Mean performance of parents and hybrids involved in half diallel mating design in bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L. var. Grossum)

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during early summer, 2017 in Randomized Block Design with three replications under net house conditions at research farm, Department of Vegetable Science, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan HP. Eight parents and their twenty-eight F1 hybrids along with the standard check (Bharat) were evaluated for thirteen yield and quality traits in bell pepper. Significant variations were noticed among all the genotypes for all the characters under study. Almost all the hybrids generated were better over one or other parent for different character studied. California Wonder x UHFBP-3 was the earliest over all the parents as well as hybrids whereas, UHFBP-3 x KC-12 was the highest yielding hybrid followed by Yolo Wonder x Nishath-1 and Solan Bharpur x Yolo Wonder. Present study suggested hybridization among diverse parents is a great way to create variability within the genus with narrow genetic base.
