Phytochemical investigation of flowers of Rosa damascena Mill

Abstract

Rosa damascena Mill. (Rosaceae) has been appreciated for decorative, fragrance, cosmetics, food and folklore medicines to treat abdominal and chest pains, menstrual bleeding, digestive problems, constipation and to strengthen the heart. It is regarded as a symbol of affection, belief and magnificence. Phytochemical investigation of a methanolic extract of R. damascena flowers led to the isolation of four new compounds identified as n-cosan-5β-ol (1), (cis)- 6, 10, 14-trimethylpentadec-3-en-7β,11β-diol (damascene, 2), 7-hydroxy-4-(3'-methyl butanol)- coumarin- 3- en-one (rosacoumarin, 3) and cedr-6-en-12-ol-14-oic acid (rosacedrenoic acid, 4). The structures of these compounds have been established on the basis of spectral data analysis and chemical means.
