Thicknesses of the cross-strata deposited during successive ebbs (the dominant current at the particular place) vary in a sinusoidal way, reflecting the tidal neap-spring cycle. Mud layers deposited during slack-water periods formed in couplets that constitute a unique criterion for distinguishing between subtidal and intertidal environments and facies.
